I've literally within the last 5 minutes got it up and running... .... even on my 256MB machine, it's going pretty well! Performance has been greatly improved. I'll get some screenies up for everyone as soon as I get the networking sorted... :oP

Unfortunately, it will only be only available on Connect as it's an interim release and will NOT be sent out via MSDN, TechNet or TechNet Plus CD/DVD's and will not be available on MSDN at all.
Only Connect :o(

Zack, one query, first time it was run after install I got the Windows defender icon and others in the task tray, after a reboot they are hidden - are you seeing this at all? The only icons visible are the net connection, sound system and volume.
I hope you are getting this otherwise the old tray icons bug from XP is still in there :( -- Tekguru (Daron Brewood) MS-MVP/Mobile Devices

Sometimes that happens with me as well. I've seen what you've said and done 3 restarts in the time. The results are: 1st: all there 2nd: all there 3rd: volume and network only.
I know this happened sometimes in 5308 but the bug report I sent in was "Postponed" it said... I guess they know about it then :o)

I'm glad of that - at least it was not just me :) I had thought it was because I'd installed Avast AV, so I removed that as it also seemed to slow down any file copies. But if you are seeing those problems too it is not down to that, unless of course you are using it too! -- Tekguru (Daron Brewood) MS-MVP/Mobile Devices

Once I got the OS loaded I was thinking to myself how nice and stable it was. Loaded up avast! and stability went out the window. Tried to remove avast! and nothing happened. I'm now trying a fresh reinstall and I *won't* be loading it.
Problems I keep having...
- Folders that are marked read-only that refuse to change, even under an admin account.
- Programs terminating without saying a word. (I'm looking at you, POPFile!).
- Programs that refuse to start (hi, Dialog!). Speaking of which, since I couldn't get my favorite news client to run I decided to try Windows Mail. It wasn't in the Program listing. What the hey? I found it under Program Files and tried running it from there but it crashed before I could create an account.
- Wouldn't allow me to create any more accounts. I kept getting an error saying I was using illegal characters in the account name. Didn't matter if I tried "Jeff", "Yeff", or "Bill" (who the hell is he?).
As for Defender, isn't the icon *supposed* to disappear when there's no problems? I've got it running on this W2K box as well as my normal XP Pro install, and as long as the updates and scans encounter no problems I never see the icon.
BTW, the system I'm beta testing on:
P4 2.8GHz HT CPU 1 gig of RAM nVidia FX 5700 /w 128 MBs of memory Audigy 2 sound card (no, I'm not using the Creative drivers) 40 gig primary hard drive (it's only in the box for Vista) 60 gig secondary drive (email data, music and pr0... pictures) Asus P4P800 Deluxe motherboard with the latest bios

Hi Jeff, thanks for that data. Sounds like we shared the same problems. Most of mine seem to be gone now as I managed to remove Avast by turning off UAP.
But yes I had the same (or similar) problems with Dialog, FeedDemon etc.
Now I'm wondering if it also screwed up my ability to activate as well. If I still can't get it to activate then I guess it will be a third blasted load of this build.
The
first build was a bad load - it took almost 2 hours before the initial reset and then after 3 errors gave a BSOD and backed it all out.
And I thought Avast was supposed to run with Vista? For now I think it is best to run without any AV cover! -- Tekguru (Daron Brewood) MS-MVP/Mobile Devices

I haven't tried to activate yet but It doesn't seem to be a problem just with you: <http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=175727#175727>

Then you guys should NOT be talking about it here in the Public Newsgroups! If it is indeed for Technical Beta Tester's Only, then it's probably also under an NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement)!

I think I may be able to finally use it on my main machine. Gotta do a lot of switching over if I do, though.
